Description

Use a virtual lab from the University of Washington to teach the effects of climate change on ocean chemistry and the ramifications of acidification on calciferous organisms using sea urchins as a model. This handout will guide students through an introduction to the phenomenon of ocean acidification with a refresher on the pH scale. Once students understand the basics, the handout will direct them through the virtual urchin lab in which they measure the effects slight changes in pH have on larval growth. Much learning can be achieved here with minimal prep and all with one handout and a laptop! The activity easily lends itself to many types of extensions such as lab reports, or further investigations on the effects of ocean acidification on marine ecology.
