This resource is part of my Heroic Women Series and is a biographical passage and assessment on the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. Born in 1820, this brilliant heroic woman was first known as “The Lady of the Lamp” for her leadership and service in treating wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War. Florence then proceeded to revolutionize the care and treatment of the sick and injured around the world for the remainder of her life, writing nursing textbooks, founding nursing schools, and being an inspirational leader in the movement for modern nursing practices. This is a biography of Florence as well as a review of all her many accomplishments and dreams. This resource was written for Grade 5-8 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). This resource includes: 1) An interesting and informative 925-word passage titled “Florence Nightingale: The Lady of the Lamp”. The passage is at a middle school reading level and tells of Nightingale’s many accomplishments during her long life in medicine and nursing. 2) A set of 32 questions, including vocabulary, comprehension, and short written tasks. Questions can only be answered by a careful first reading and close re-reading of the passage and were created to align with Common Core Informational Text Standards RI.3.8, RI.4.1, RI.5.4, RI.6.1, and RI.6.4 3) An additional crossword puzzle for early finishers or as an alternative form of assessment. 4) Answers to every question. A German Jew forced into hiding along with her family for over two years during World War II, Anne’s courage in the face of constant fear and her talent for writing led to the eventual publication of The Diary of Anne Frank after her death and the end of the war. This is the story of Anne’s short life, a review of her character, and a look at some of the insights and observations she included in her diary. A top athlete from a very young age, Billie Jean worked hard and became the most dominant female tennis player of her generation in the 1960s and 70s. Not content with the status quo, King then moved ahead and became perhaps the single most influential figure of the past century in the successful fight for recognition and pay parity for women athletes. This text follows her life from the early days on public tennis courts of Long Beach, California to her acceptance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Highly-educated and outspoken, Shirley was an author, educator, and politician like no other and an inspiration to millions during her lifetime and beyond. This text details her life from her childhood in Brooklyn and Barbados to her presidential bid in 1972 and beyond, ending with her Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was awarded posthumously in 2015. Blind and deaf from the age of nineteen months, Helen lived in her own small world and suffered complete isolation as a young child. Then, in 1887, the teacher Anne Sullivan took on the challenging task of opening Helen to the world around her. Graduating from Radcliffe College with honors in 1904, Helen (with Anne as her guide) went on to become one of the most remarkable women of the 20th century, developing into an author, lecturer on disabilities, and political activist. This text follows her life from childhood and details many of her amazing accomplishments.
