Description

Subjects and predicates can be hard for 2nd graders to conceptualize. Capture your learners' interest with this fun, differentiated, ocean-themed game and center set where they'll practice producing simple sentences from the given subjects and predicates.

In the Shelly Sentences game, learners try to 'collect" as many seashells from the beach as possible. Players will spin a subject, then a predicate, say the sentence they make, and find it on one of the shells on the beach. Sometimes the sentences will be silly! This is a great opportunity to talk about why a sentence is silly and what would make it not silly. The player or team that collects the most shells wins the game.

I've included complete subject and predicate strips, work mats, and sentence recording sheets if you'd like to have a great center activity instead of, or in addition to, the game. It is great for covering part of the skills found in standard L.2.1.F: Produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences. *Note: This resource only involves producing complete simple sentences and does not involve expanding or rearranging simple and compound sentences.

'Shelly Sentences" is perfect for:
🔵 small groups
🔵 tutoring
🔵 centers
🔵 fun seat work
🔵 learning support

The game is easy to prep and just a few pages to print out! Choose color or b/w, laminate it or slip it into a plastic sleeve, model how to play it, and you're all set. Students will need wipe-off markers or crayons, a paper clip or two, and a pencil for the spinner.

In this resource you will get:
🔵 2 differentiated game boards in color and b/w (either 16 or 20 possible sentences per game). The 20-sentence version adds the element of alliteration to each subject, making kiddos giggle as they say each sentence!
🔵 subject and predicate strips in color and b/w (differentiated by either 8 or 9 strips)
🔵 differentiated work mats (spinners have either 4 or 5 phrases on each)
🔵 student recording sheets - use these if you want students to write their completed sentences
