Get your students writing claims and using evidence at the very start of the year with these upper elementary / middle grade writing prompts. Their answers will give you insight on their opinions and help you shape your lessons by determining their level of writing abilities right away!
CHANGE MY MIND: Students are presented with a debatable and possibly controversial statement. The ones in this product are related to school topics and learning. I have my students choose one side or the other. They could also argue BOTH sides which will make them a stronger writer.
After they complete all 5 prompts, they are asked to select ONE of their arguments to rewrite as a letter to the school board. Doing this right away at the start of the year sets the tone... revisions are a requirement in your class!
