To ensure the well-being of their livestock, families blocked off around one-third of their homes. Doing so allowed them to keep their cows, goats, and sheep inside, away from wild animals and threatening weather. As a result, the huts became overrun with rodents and insects. Without resources to ensure cleanliness, villagers became susceptible to illnesses. Death was frequent under these unclean and harsh living conditions.
