These creatures, the largest mammals to walk upon the earth, are experts at knowing when their bodies lack salt. The matriarch ensures that this deficiency does not occur by leading the herd deep into the caverns of Mt. Elgon. There, they stumble over stones weighing thousands of pounds. They force their lumbering bodies through tight passageways, exposing themselves to danger. They do so to satisfy their need for the compound halite, or NaCl, created when an atom of sodium joins one of chloride.
