Excerpt I
Even though Vesuvius is Italy's most well-known mountain, it had no recorded history before A.D. 79. However, today's geologists provide evidence that this volcano has experienced eight significant eruptions. During the Old Bronze Age, around 3,780 years ago, the Avellino Eruption occurred. It was twice as powerful as the one that buried the Italian cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Thousands of miles of fertile land became barren. Following the eruption, the earth around the volcano became uninhabitable for two hundred years. Footprints preserved in hardened mudflows provide evidence left by its victims.
