Teaching summarization is easy with this nonfiction reading unit. Just have your students follow the step-by-step directions on the PPP provided and assess their writing with the accompanying rubric. The original three 1/2-page informational passage is accompanied by ten comprehension questions and is appropriate for grades 7-9.
In addition, this resource allows students to work on academic vocabulary acquisition and retention by including the following:
1) ten vocabulary words with definitions, a review, and a quiz
2) eight more vocabulary words with a context clues worksheet for inferring meaning

After they set sail, the mariners faced constant perils. The young sailors slept in cargo holds or on the deck's coiled ropes, exhausted after long work hours. Before dawn, they arose to swab the deck. Few of the workers wore shoes, even in the coldest weather. Otherwise, they feared they would slip and fall to their deaths. Because of inadequate sleep and unhealthy food, accidents and illnesses occurred with frequency. Even worse, a lack of vitamin C resulted in scurvy. Author Catherine Price explains how deadly this disease was for sailors without access to a healthy diet. 'Scurvy killed more than two million sailors between the time of Columbus' voyage and the mid-19th century" (Age).
