Description

Model the mark recapture method to estimate the population of tadpoles in a pond with a virtual lab. Students will use the instructions from the handout provided to simulate the mark recapture method while recording and analyzing data.

The handout is available for students to work on digitally or in print. Complete with data tables and analysis questions, it is a ready to go lesson on the technique, advantages and limitations of the mark recapture method. It is suitable for both AP Environmental Science and Biology courses. For Biology/Living Earth courses, the analysis questions can be scaffolded by teacher provided sentence starters.

The handout begins with a link to the virtual lab and a brief introduction. Next there are instructions on setting up each trial, performing the experiment, and the type of data to collect. Once students have collected the requisite data, they perform calculations with a provided formula to estimate the tadpole population and compare it to an actual count. Finally, students answer analysis questions using their data to determine the effectiveness and limitations of the mark recapture method in estimating population size.
