Teaching children with learned helplessness
Kids who benefit from learning self-help skills with visual supports
2-8-year-olds
Getting dressed is an important skill that nearly every child would benefit from being able to do independently, however, many children with autism or even typically developing young children may be resistant to attempting dressing on their own. Unfortunately, this often leads to learned helplessness where the child feels completely dependent on an adult to help them when in reality, with some practice, they could be successfully independent. Visual supports, visual reward systems, and stories that encourage independence are an effective and easy way to help children become independent with this dressing themselves. This resource includes everything you need to begin working with a reluctant dresser.

Includes:

Dressing visual sequence (3 styles to choose from, each in boy or girl style)
Interactive adaptive story that reinforces the dressing steps
Social skills story emphasizing the benefits of independence
First/then board (including several pictures to focus on dressing)
Sticker charts (boy/girl version in 2 styles)
Parent handout
Data sheets (putting on shirt, pants, and socks)
