Description
Take mentor sentences to the next level by having them write as if THEY are the author. In this product, students work through three different activities to find their WRITING VOICE. Perfect for grades 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Activity 1:
A passage from a well-known novel is presented with one sentence missing. Students must use their own voice to fill in the sentence, then check on the reveal slide to see how the author actually wrote it!
Passages are used from these 4 novels:
Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Activity 2:
Students become VOICE DETECTIVES. Using novels in the classroom or library, they hunt through them looking for an example of strong voice. They write their chosen passage for two different novels.
Activity 3:
Given an original set-up of a scene, students finish the scene with their own "voice" by injecting emotional responses and precise language.
Two PDFs of printable worksheets are also included if you would like students to complete activity 2 and 3 on paper.
